GO SUCCESS : META TAGS

It's amazing how often I see meta tags mentioned in relation to search engine optimization. Many still cling to the past, remembering how easy it was to trick the search engines into sending you traffic by filling up your meta tags.
Some advice for you - the quicker you accept that meta tags are all but dead, the happier you will be. They are pretty much irrelevant these days because the search engines have learnt that, unfortunately, not everyone is honest. If everyone did the right thing and just used them to get targeted traffic to their site, the 'net would be a much simpler place.
But, we have to move with the times.
So, there are two types of meta tags. The meta keywords tag and the meta description tag. These should be put on each of your pages between the tags. They look like this:

As you can see, the way to use them is to get some keywords into your description whilst still making it readable. The keywords tag is just a bunch of keywords that you think people will search for.
Don't get me wrong, I think you should still use meta tags on your pages. Just don't think that they are going to make much difference when the search engines decide to rank you.
Their current status is as follows. Google doesn't use them at all. AllTheWeb doesn't use them at all. AltaVista doesn't use them at all. Inktomi uses them both - probably.
Please note: Lot's of people get confused when the see descriptions from the meta description tag show up in search engines like Google or AltaVista. Yes, they sometimes use the description that is provided, but the text in that description is not actually used for ranking purposes. In fact, if you search for a word that is only in the meta tags of your site, you will not show up on any search engine except Inktomi.
So, the description needs to be good because it might show up with your listing. Both tags are used by Inktomi but they are not treated with much relevance and in fact, I wouldn't be surprised if Inktomi stopped using them in the near future. They are essentially the reason for why Inktomi has a reputation for providing bad results.
Now, don't spend to much time over this. Just write a description, list some keywords, stick them on your pages and forget about them. BTW, you should use different keywords and descriptions on each page - it may help slightly with targeting particular keywords on Inktomi.
There are theories going around that all search engines do use meta tags but only when the words that they see there are included in the body of a page. I suppose that this means if the word "widget" is in your text, it gets an extra boost by being in your meta tags.
I really don't believe this to be the case but, I do believe that sites should prepare themselves for anything. So, only include keywords in your meta tags that appear in your page. Don't try to target other words in your meta tags because they most definitely will be ignored.
