GO SUCCESS : LEVERAGING BUSINESS VALUE WITH XML AND ORACLE A PROVEN MULTI-PURPOSE RDBMS / XML SOLUTION FRAMEWORK

Situation
Where structured information is concerned, the fundamental tenets behind relational data and XML are
very similar. It is due to the inherent structures of both these forms of content that makes transforma-
tion from one to the other consistently accurate and efficient. Newbook has been called upon by many
customers from various industry sectors to solve the recurring business requirements of organizations
that are looking to exploit their vast reserves of relational content and take advantage of the rapid,
multi-lingual, multi-channel dissemination of this critical information via XML.
Challenge
In many cases, relational content is of both a statistical and textual nature. Repeatedly, it is the cus-
tomer’s wish to merge information from numerous fields within the relational model into single infor-
mation objects that can then be published in various mediums and in numerous languages.
However, before collecting and assembling all of this disparate content and serving it up for human
consumption, editorial staff must first see a ‘composed view’ of the information for quality assurance
purposes. In addition, they must have the ability to preview their changes to the database content, in
real time, as it exists at any given moment.
Often the textual portions within the relational schema are significant and numerous, to the point that
managing these strings as relational objects, and using standard database client software is no longer
viable. While wanting to retain the data security benefits of an RDBMS, customers are continually
searching for ways to optimally create and update textual content in a more effective and efficient man-
ner.
Solution
In response to its many customers who wish to take full advantage of the benefits of an RDBMS and the
power of XML, Newbook has developed a reusable Solution Framework based on XML and Oracle’s
SDK/XDK developer toolkits. This framework is flexible, adaptable and can respond to many business
challenges. True to form, as a Newbook offering, the accent is on scaleable, open-source technologies.
A typical framework solution includes:

• A light-weight, performant Web-based envi-
ronment, that provides reliable, user-friendly
direct connectivity to the database content;
• A rules-based XML data model that ensures
content consistency throughout the business
cycle;
• Extraction routines that pull and aggregate
diverse content from across the relational
model;
• HTML transformation routines that allow
users to view the extracted database content in
real-time via a Web browser;

• Publishing and Data Delivery assembly rou-
tines that can assemble all the publishing ob-
jects into a single XML file for print and/or
CD-ROM production or assemble selected por-
tions of final XML for data delivery;
• An online delivery capability that can incor-
porate search functions and assorted naviga-
tors, as well as a PDF-based print-on-demand
facility.
Benefits
This Newbook offering transforms traditional relational databases into powerful, dynamic publishing
platforms. It accelerates the revision cycle and ensures 100% content accuracy. Information is federated
from across the database schema, be it relational, XML, or graphical and consistently publishes this con-
tent as rich, value-added objects. This powerful framework helps organizations to be a step ahead of the
competition and lets them meet the constant demands for timely, pertinent content with confidence.
Additional content can be easily and rapidly incorporated into the solution, regardless of language or
desired form of published output (Web, print, or CD-ROM.)

GO SUCCESS : META TAGS

It's amazing how often I see meta tags mentioned in relation to search engine optimization. Many still cling to the past, remembering how easy it was to trick the search engines into sending you traffic by filling up your meta tags.
Some advice for you - the quicker you accept that meta tags are all but dead, the happier you will be. They are pretty much irrelevant these days because the search engines have learnt that, unfortunately, not everyone is honest. If everyone did the right thing and just used them to get targeted traffic to their site, the 'net would be a much simpler place.
But, we have to move with the times.
So, there are two types of meta tags. The meta keywords tag and the meta description tag. These should be put on each of your pages between the tags. They look like this:

As you can see, the way to use them is to get some keywords into your description whilst still making it readable. The keywords tag is just a bunch of keywords that you think people will search for.
Don't get me wrong, I think you should still use meta tags on your pages. Just don't think that they are going to make much difference when the search engines decide to rank you.
Their current status is as follows. Google doesn't use them at all. AllTheWeb doesn't use them at all. AltaVista doesn't use them at all. Inktomi uses them both - probably.
Please note: Lot's of people get confused when the see descriptions from the meta description tag show up in search engines like Google or AltaVista. Yes, they sometimes use the description that is provided, but the text in that description is not actually used for ranking purposes. In fact, if you search for a word that is only in the meta tags of your site, you will not show up on any search engine except Inktomi.
So, the description needs to be good because it might show up with your listing. Both tags are used by Inktomi but they are not treated with much relevance and in fact, I wouldn't be surprised if Inktomi stopped using them in the near future. They are essentially the reason for why Inktomi has a reputation for providing bad results.
Now, don't spend to much time over this. Just write a description, list some keywords, stick them on your pages and forget about them. BTW, you should use different keywords and descriptions on each page - it may help slightly with targeting particular keywords on Inktomi.
There are theories going around that all search engines do use meta tags but only when the words that they see there are included in the body of a page. I suppose that this means if the word "widget" is in your text, it gets an extra boost by being in your meta tags.
I really don't believe this to be the case but, I do believe that sites should prepare themselves for anything. So, only include keywords in your meta tags that appear in your page. Don't try to target other words in your meta tags because they most definitely will be ignored.

GO SUCCESS : NON RECIPROCAL LINKING

As I'm sure you know, it's quite easy to exchange links with other sites and it's a great way to get lots of extra traffic to your site. One of the problems with reciprocal linking is that often you get your link stuck on a links page with dozens of other sites. Also, it's not always practical for you to link back to every site that you want to link to you.
In addition to this, the search engines all like you to have links to your site. But, as I explain in Rankings Revealed, not all links are beneficial and the best links are ones that are on pages with very few other links. Therefore, as a part of your marketing strategy, it's very important that you attempt to get links that the search engines see as a "recommendation", not just a link from a page with many others.
The first step is very simple. Just ask! Contrary to popular belief, you don't need to offer to exchange links with other sites. Many sites have links to places that don't link back. They do this because it's useful for their visitors. So, if you clearly state the benefits of linking to your site in an e-mail, many sites will be happy to link to you. The worst that can happen is that they'll say no or ask for a reciprocal link. No harm done there.
An additional tip is to make it as easy as possible to get them to link to you. Suggest a relevant page in your e-mail and provide them with the HTML code to link to you. All they have to do is copy and paste and they are done.
Another way to do it is to "bribe" other sites. If you have a newsletter, you can offer free ads in return for a link. You could run a linking competition - the prize being a free ad or a link on your site. This is a reciprocal link but only to one site each week or month. Be creative. Think of why you link to sites that don't link back (which I'm sure you do). Then, give those reasons to other sites to get them to link to you.
Again, don't be afraid to just ask. You'll be surprised how many links you can get.
The next step is to find relevant directories. There are thousands of directories on the internet that cover every possible topic. Unfortunately, from a search engine point of view, many links in these directories are of little value. This is because most directories use a script of some kind to link to you. As the link runs through the script to count clicks, the search engines don't count them. But, links are not just about search engines so make sure you are linked in all of the relevant directories that you can find.
If you find directories that don't actually use a script or that build their directory by pulling the links straight from a database then these are extra good links. You get traffic from the directory and the search engines like them.
Another thing that most people don't realise about these directories is that it's possible to actually include HTML in the description that you provide. If you look through the directories that I have at WebmastersReference.com you'll see that I have allowed some of the sites to link to themselves straight from the description. The search engines most definitely do follow these links.
Obviously, some directories won't let you do this but some will (I do). If you are unsure if a site allows it, I'd strongly recommend that you ask them first.
One of the best ways to do it is to link from the description to something specific on your site. The directories may not let you do it if the link goes to the same place as your main link that you submit. But, if you link from your description to a specific article or section of your site, it may be allowed.
For example, I could submit a link to a webmasters resources directory. I'd add my home page - http://www.webmastersreference.com. In the description, I may also be allowed to add something like "Home of Rankings Revealed - http://www.webmastersreference.com/rankings_revealed". It's important to note that you would probably need to include the full "a href" HTML for the link to actually appear as a link in the directory.
Once again, it doesn't hurt to ask. Send an e-mail to the owner of the directory and state a good reason for why you'd like to include a link in your description. As I said, the worst that can happen is that they'll say no.
Step number three. Write to site owners and say something nice about their site or their product. In other words, provide a testimonial. If they like it, there is a very good chance that they'll use it on their site because it makes them look good to their visitors. You can see an example of this with the two quotes I provided above about my eBook. I was flattered that Rebekah and Jeff were happy with my eBook so I quoted them on my site. Of course, it's etiquette to provide a link back and actually gives the quote more value because the site's visitors can see it comes from a real person with a real site.
You can see this kind of thing happening all the time on the internet so don't hesitate to send a site owner an e-mail telling them how great they are. These links can be excellent because they will often be put on pages with very few others.
Step four follows a similar way of thinking. Write reviews on your site for other sites, products or services. Then, e-mail the site that you have reviewed and tell them about it. This essentially creates a reciprocal link but you won't be stuck on a links page. There is every chance that they'll link to you from a very relevant page. Of course, they'll want to link straight to the review so make sure that when a visitor arrives on your page via the link, you are able to push them towards what it is that you want to sell them.
I wrote a review on WebmastersReference.com for the stats script that I use. I actually didn't tell the creators of the script that I had done it but they obviously found out when they saw that I had sent them traffic. Before I knew it there was a link to the review I had written from their sales page. It's nice and prominent so I get traffic from it and the search engines like it. This can actually be an extra bonus because I now rank quite highly on the search engines when people look for that particular product. I'm not using an affiliate link to send traffic back but I could.
You could write reviews for literally dozens of products and services that match your target market and get just as many links pointing to your site.
The last step I'll tell you about is actually the simplest in terms of getting a link to your site. One of the most popular traffic generation techniques online is to write articles for other people to use in their newsletters or on their site. This does tend to create lots of traffic and has an added bonus because it helps you to show that you are an expert on your topic.
In the context that we are looking at here, there are additional features of this technique. The main one being that when your article appears in an ezine or on another site, your "bio" box is included. Of course, this includes a link back to your site. As many people archive their newsletters on their site, this can provide extra links.
Now, there is another part of this that can prove very beneficial. There are many article directories online to which you can submit your articles. Lots of them just link to the article on your site which is not always overly helpful from a search engine perspective because of the reasons that I outlined with directories above. However, these are still useful because it allows people to find your article and there is every chance that they could use it in their ezine or on their site.
The best article directories to use are the ones that actually place the article on their site. This benefits you in the same way that an article in an ezine does. Your bio box has a link to you which the search engines will usually pick up. If you don't have any articles that relate to your topic, write some and submit them to these directories. If you already have some articles on your site, make sure that you submit them wherever possible.
I was planning to list some article directories in this newsletter but I've just done a search on Google and there are hundreds that cover all kinds of topics. So, just use this link to search for "article directory" on Google - http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=article+directory. Also do a search using the relevant keywords for your site. For example, "soccer article directory".
I hope that the above information has given you some ideas for getting extra links to your site. I'm sure that there are many other ways that you can come up with but maybe I've helped you to think that you don't just need to exchange links to get more traffic to your site.

GO SUCCESS : PROFITING FROM MISTAKES

For many years now, getting traffic from search engines when people misspell a word has been a popular technique. I've often read that you should include spelling errors in the meta keyword tag on your page. Unfortunately, there is a problem with this advice.
None of the search engines actually index the meta keyword tag!
So, this doesn't work. It did work a few years back but not any more. Before I tell you what you need to do to target typos, lets look at a few example to see if it's actually something that you should bother with.
I spent a day this week looking for signs that people do actually make mistakes when searching for stuff. Here are my findings. The numbers associated with each term are the total of searches performed on Overture last month.
eBay: ebey - 6852, rbay - 1055, dbay - 383, sbay - 248, evay - 681, enay - 516, ebqy - 318, ebzy - 202, ebsy - 1010, ebau - 2077, ebah - 99, ebaj - 36, webay - 177, rebay - 197.
Amazon: anazon - 372, amaxon - 486, amazom - 2104, amazob - 38. Corey Rudl: cory rudl - 702, corey rudel - 40
These are all brand names. Let's take a quick look at some generic terms.
Soccer: socer - 1098, socccer - 147, soocer - 619, sooccer - 47, soceer - 226,. Food: fod - 1299, ffod - 198, fodd - 74, ffood - 56, foood - 242.
It's important to note that with some of the above, people were actually searching for the keywords that they typed in. Also, in the case of the eBay examples, the keywords that I have used may often relate to another topic such as a radio station name. Still, it's easy enough to see that lots of people do make mistakes when they search.
There are a few things that we can learn from this. The first is that the more a keyword is searched for, the more chance there is that someone will make a mistake - this is obvious. The second is that sometimes people just don't know how to spell what they are looking for. This is most common with names and technical terms. The third is that people often make mistakes when searching for words that have letters repeated - soCCer, fOOd. They double up the wrong letter or type it too many times. I actually find myself doing this quite often.
Now, keywords that are spelled incorrectly are extremely easy to target on the search engines. Why? Because people who run websites tend not to include information on their sites with major spelling errors. The more professional the site, the less likely it is that there will be a spelling mistake. The sites that do spell keywords wrong tend not to be too hard to beat in the rankings because if they are unprofessional enough to have spelling mistakes for important words, chances are they don't have too many links pointing to them.
This is where it gets tricky. You don't want to be appear unprofessional by having spelling mistakes on your site. I don't recommend doing this just to target the search engines.
So, how do you get some of this traffic?
As I said previously, the search engines do not use the meta keyword tag so this option is out.
This article is, in itself, a big clue. When I put this article on my site, I'll rank quite well for all of the terms that I mentioned above. I will also add some links to the article. For example, "If you are looking for eBay, Click Here". Of course, I'll include my affiliate link.
Therefore, you need to use a bit of creativity on your site to get the spelling mistakes seen by the search engines. One of the most popular ways of doing it is to use hidden text. This could be by making the text really small or the same colour as the background. Don't do this. The search engines don't like it and will ban you if they catch you doing it. It's not worth the risk.
Another option is to write an article and then provide a list of "common misspellings" at the bottom of the article. Generally, this will be OK if you are targeting a keyword that is notoriously difficult to spell. However, there is a slim chance that the search engines would view this as keyword stuffing if they chose to manually review your site. If you do choose to do this, don't go overboard. As I said, generally, it'll be OK but not always.
A third option is to provide common misspellings within the text of the article. For example, I could write an article about eBay and put the following in brackets after one of the occurrences of the term eBay - "not eBey as many people think". If you are targeting a person's name or a technical term, it can be viewed as helpful to the person reading the article if you tell them how to spell a word correctly.
Another example could be for me to write an article about Corey Rudl. Within the article, I could point out that many people do spell his name Cory but Corey is correct.
As I said, be creative - don't try to be tricky. You will often find that, in relation to Google, one mention of the keyword in the text of a page will be enough to get you near the top of the rankings if your PR is high enough.
There is one more step that you need to follow. I'm largely focussing on using this to get traffic for your site or as a way to get people from the search engines and forward them on to another site via an affiliate program. So, if people unknowingly make a mistake when they do a search, the title for your page must give the impression that they have found what they are looking for. If they intended to search for eBay, you must make sure that you grab them quickly with your title so that they will visit your site. So, "Review of eBay" would be a good example.
If the title of your listing does not really match what they are searching for, it may alert them to the fact that they have made a mistake.
Now, Google offers alternative spellings if they think a searcher has made a mistake. So, if you are listed at number one for the incorrectly spelt keyword, you have a chance to get them before they click on the link that Google provides to the results for the correct spelling.
The technique that I've mentioned here is a very simple way to target the search engines and can often be used effectively by newish sites whose PR is not high enough to target the correct version of the keyword. It's also useful if you or your products become well known because it will make sure that people can find you even if they can't spell the name correctly.
On Overture last month there were 92 searches for Sean Burns. There were also 91 searches for Shaun Burns and 29 for Shawn Burns. Now, I won't pretend that all of these people were looking for me but I should make sure that the ones that are can find me, even if they spell my name incorrectly.
Who knows? They may be the ones who want to buy my eBook!

GO SUCCESS : AFFILIATE INCOME OPTIMIZATION

In my time researching the search engines, I've noticed something rather strange. Literally millions of searches are made each month for "brand names" and actual site names. For example, on Overture alone, last month, there were millions of queries made for the term "internet explorer". Having been on the internet for around seven years (running sites for over five), I've naturally assumed that people use it the same way I do. So, I know that internet explorer is a Microsoft product so I just type http://www.microsoft.com into my browser.
Apparently, that's not what everyone does. Here are some other examples from Overture: eBay - over 7 million searches, Google - over 9 million searches, Amazon - Over 800 thousand searches (OK, lots will be for the river or the forest but still ...), PayPal over 340 thousand searches and so on. Considering that Overture has only about 5% of the search engine market, you can see that there are millions and millions of people who actually use search engines to find sites when they could just type the name in their browser and slap a .com on the end.
Now, on to the good stuff. Of those companies that I mentioned, all but Google have an affiliate program. For example, PayPal pays $5.00 for every person who signs up. 340 000 x $5.00= $1 700 000. Interesting!
So, what can we do to make the most of this opportunity? Well, it's easier than you would think. Obviously, trying to get traffic from people searching for eBay or PayPal would be very difficult but there are literally thousands of other companies that people search for. For example, I just checked the three best known British sports betting companies - about 20 000 searches are made each month on Overture for these companies.
I have noticed that without any effort whatsoever, I am actually getting a lot of traffic from people searching for company names and script names. This is because they are listed in my Affiliate and Script directories. An example of the process is - people search for a particular merchant, come to my affiliate directory and click on the link to get to the merchant. Therefore, even though they have no interest in the affiliate program, I'm making money just by linking to merchants who's content is completely unrelated to mine.
Remember, this is without even trying. When I do try, I'm getting even more traffic. For example, I have a review of the FastClick ad network on my site. I get 10+ visitors each day from people searching for phrases that include the word fastclick. That's 300+ visitors per month, 15 000 per year. As you could imagine, due to the fact that FastClick pay a lifetime 5% commission on referred earnings, this is quite lucrative.
So, what do you need to do? Well, you probably already use affiliate programs in some form on your site - either as a major source of revenue or to make "backend" sales. I went for years just linking to them with banners, buttons and text links. The odd short recommendation here and there proved to be the best way to get the most out of them.
The problem, from a search engine perspective, is that just linking to them from your site will generally not get your page up high in the search engine rankings. A link to merchant "Acme Corp." just blends in to the text on your page and is assigned no real relevance. Therefore, you should put up an individual page on your site for each merchant that you are an affiliate of. This page could just be a review of the products or services that they offer.
Just the fact that you have a content rich page about a specific merchant will almost automatically get you traffic from the search engines (once you are listed). The main point is "content rich". Also, write it yourself, do not copy content from the merchants site. Why? Well, even if they let you copy their content (lots do), Google has ways of finding duplicate content. In fact, they will usually ban the page that they believe is less important if two have the same information on them. So, write it yourself.
Remember that if the merchant sells products that have gained recognition from the public, make sure you list their products.
Now, if you have a copy of my eBook, you will be able to follow each step on search engine optimizing each page. Just using it for this method will earn you back the price of the book very quickly. However, if you don't want to spend the money, just having the page on your site and making sure that you cover various words that people search for such as "review" and "information" will ensure some success.
If you already have a successful site, the search engines will actually view your "review" of a merchant as being important and it is no harder to get that page in to the top 10 listings than it is for any other page on your site.
Often, the difference between doing well and being truly successful online is just the ability to grab opportunities when they appear. You could find that spending just 10 minutes to set up a couple of new pages on your site could actually result in thousands of dollars in extra income each year.
Remember, there are close to 600 million queries made on search engines each day - this is an opportunity! Don't let it pass you by.
